2020s: A Decade to Build for Planet 🌎

Let’s accept the hard truth we are not shipping enough to stop the climate crisis.

Most people and organizations recognize that climate crisis is a serious problem but not enough collective action is being taken to create a regenerative economy.

The 2020s have golden opportunities to build for the planet.

Maximizing Profits vs. Maximizing Impact

The doctrine of Milton Friedman was clear that a firm’s sole responsibility is to maximize profits for shareholders.

Maximizing profits creates short-termism for a finite game. Profit maximization can be a massive mistake once we know that that planet operates in an infinite game. Short-termism and maximizing quarterly profits unleash an extractive economy where sustainability is not a concern, but it is. We are already consuming 1.5X more resources than nature can sustain. Once we embrace the stakeholder approach the rules of the game change for good.

Here are three tips on how to build for planet.

#1. Look for mitigation and adaptation

To leave no one behind we need both.

Lowering negative impact is a must, but adaptive solutions can be more inclusive of solving problems of those already affected by adversities.

#2. Think and act systematically

Complex problems require complex thinking.

If your watch is broken, you replace the screen. If the climate is broken, then you need to replace the system. To find the points of intervention and areas of opportunity, feedback loops must be identified to create leverages.

#3. Publish a positive narrative

Existential alarmism can be counterproductive, embrace positivity

The problems we face in the 21st century are significant problems with great values and return. Instead of looking to problems, let’s create a positive narrative to trigger collective action.

An entrepreneur finds a problem and transforms it into an opportunity. Building for the planet is a significant challenge of our time and the next generation to come. We need your ideas at scale. Now, whatever you think build for planet as well.
